The First Successful Case in China! CYG SUNRI’s Black Start Energy Storage System Successfully Starts 2x196MW9E Gas Turbines

On December 4, 2020, CYG SUNRI’s 2.5 MW/2.5MWh black start energy storage system was successfully tested in Guangzhou GCL Blue Sky Gas-fired Power Station, and passed the strict test conducted by the Electric Power Research Institute of Guangdong Power Grid Corporation and the acceptance inspection by Guangdong Electric Power Dispatching Center and the Power Supply Bureau. In this project, the electrochemical energy storage system is used to independently complete the black start of the gas-fired power station. In the case of power failure of the power station, the 2.5 MW energy storage system of CYG SUNRI successfully drove the 2x196MW 9E gas turbines, and started the gas units and helped the power grid recover. Its black start capability effectively ensured the safety of the power system.


The project is in Yonghe Economic Development Zone, Huangpu District, Guangzhou. The project was successfully put into operation, enabling the 400V emergency power supply for the security sections of the power station to have black start function. If the auxiliary power is cut off, the energy storage system will automatically supply power to the security sections of the units, and then gradually expand the range of system recovery, and finally realize the recovery of the whole system. The energy storage system can realize safe production and independent recovery, and improve the power supply reliability of the power station.



The black start energy storage system integrates SUNRI’s advanced products such as PRS-7563-400/630 power conversion system, PRS-3201B energy storage coordinated controller, PRS-3000 energy storage monitoring and energy management system, and PRS-7550 battery management system. It is a storage battery black start system with output power of not less than 2.5MW, discharge rate of 1C and capacity of 2.5 MWh.




The technical core of the black start system is the coordinated control of the energy storage system. Relying on strong R&D strength, CYG SUNRI’s R&D technicians developed an improved virtual impedance droop control algorithm, thus realized the parallel operation of four PCSs in voltage source mode without communication and transformer isolation, and each PCS had equal power. In addition, according to scheduling instructions of the energy storage coordinated controller, logic instructions for communication among the PCSs and the operating states of the PCSs, operating states of the PCSs can be switched to ensure the stable and orderly operation of the parallel PCSs, thus facilitating black start of the whole energy storage system.
